Our Story
Books and Desserts Book Club, founded by two visionary friends, Nma Nzerue and Somachi Kachikwu, has reached a significant milestone as it celebrates its 11th anniversary in December 2024. What began in 2013 as a small gathering of women in Abuja, Nigeria, has grown into a global movement, connecting women across continents through a shared passion for literature and meaningful conversation.
The Beginning
In December 2013, Nma and Somachi had a simple yet profound idea: to create a space where women could come together, not just to read, but to explore the deep connections between literature and life. They envisioned a community where every discussion would spark inspiration, foster growth, and build lasting relationships. From that vision, the Books and Desserts Book Club was born.
The Growth
Over the past 11 years, what started as a passion project has blossomed into a vibrant network of over 200 women, with chapters in Abuja, Lagos, Enugu, Port Harcourt, London, Toronto, Calgary, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, and a dynamic virtual platform that connects members worldwide. The club has become a beacon of intellectual engagement, offering a sanctuary where women can nurture their love for reading while building their confidence, resilience, and leadership capabilities.
